why couldn’t time have stopped in 1994? sort of like groundhog day but with a whole year instead of just one day

….don’t worry no more random youtube posts from now on. I’m still urgently seeking employment, preferably overseas, and have pretty much run out of cash…. thats why there’s no travel or crate digging posts…. if you know anyone who A) can offer some entry-level employment in graphic arts/publishing/art administration anywhere other than the UK, or B) just fancies paypalling me a few grand (that’s info@omnicloth.co.uk) then you really need to get in touch with me. ASAP. Or actually there’s a third option, C) know a dope mc? tell him/her to hit me up, I’ve got beats for days, and I’m desperate to get some proper recordings done, thats myspace.com/djmightywhite . Alright rant over, and back to my initial intent…. no more youtube videos, promise.

Right, I’m going to keep it short this week, primarily cause it’s a gorgeous nuclear October day and I want to get out on my bike. First up two 45 King sure-shots featuring Lakim Shabazz on rapping duty. It seems wrong, that despite having only one dodgy instrumental hip-house excursion, Shabazz’s Pure Righteousness LP doesn’t get much props. If you’ve ever danced to the 900 Number in a club AND you own a copy of Paid In Full then you should probably dig out this record. Gentle Giant on the other hand are more of an acquired taste, personally I’ve found myself listening to the Power and the Glory on a relatively regular basis. And the proto-hair metal of the last third of the track I’ve ripped from Three Friends is just hilariously endearing. Alright words dun, to the music.

LAKIM SHABAZZ “Getting Fierce” from Pure Righteousness (Tuff City 1988)

THE 45 KING featuring LAKIM SHABAZZ “The Red The Black The Green” (Tuff City 1989)

GENTLE GIANT “Proclamation” & “Aspirations” from The Power and The Glory (WWA Records 1974)

GENTLE GIANT “Peel the Paint” from Three Friends (Columbia 1972)

…..and to make a sunny sunday even better, I just walked into the kitchen to retrieve my cheese on toast from the oven, and low and behold Babe Ruth’s The Mexican was coming out the DAB radio, god bless BBC6 Music, sometimes.

it’s raining again, but anyway….

It’s pissing down outside, it’s a sunday and I haven’t blessed this blog with any buried treasure in a while so, in tribute, here’s a whole heap of sonic business. This is just a small selection of my Parisian trawl… sadly I didn’t come across any of Daniel Janin’s Super Succes records (well documented by frenchattack.com, here), which I wrongly assumed would populate the flea market at Port de Clingacourt. Aw well, I still managed to fill my suitcase with a whole heap of gems.

I’ll start easy, nothing too mentally taxing, ease you in slowly. So first up a dope slab of bassy ‘92 rap music from Da King & I. Minimal boom bappin’ beat and a nice flow of ever so slightly conscious rhymes made this a lesser known must have 12.

DA KING & I “Flip Da Script” (Rowdy Records 1992)

I was almost certain when I fumbled across this Patti Drew LP that it was entirely about her “Hard to Handle” cover (which I believe featured on a late nineties Blue Note compilation, or possibly a Planet of The Breaks comp, anyone help me out here?)…. but when I got it home I was delighted to find a whole heap of deep and soulful cuts without a single whiff of cheese. Provided for your auditory pleasure here is the raw horn funk of her “Fever” cover, which I’m certain would absolutely destroy any dancefloor.

PATTI DREW “Fever” from I’ve Been Here All The Time (Capitol 1969)

Couldn’t leave Paris without a couple of cheap Dutronc 45s. And I couldn’t leave this blog post without a mention of Serge Gainsbourg. This one was written by Jacques and Serge…..

JACQUES DUTRONC “Elle Est Si…” (Disques Vogue 1972)

The next seven inch I’ve ripped for you is a pretty bog standard a-side soul, b-side funk instrumental 45 from the man like Chip Jones and his band of comrades. However what makes this track exceptional becomes apparent as soon as the lead vocal hits…. which they’ve absolutely smothered with delay and reverb, giving it a superb ethereal effect, only enhanced by almost unnoticeable points later in the song where they fuck with the pitch and tone of those additions craftily. Dope, agreed?

BLACK HEAT “Street Of Tears” (Atlantic 1972)

Now I’m almost certain that playing this Catharsis record too many times will summon some type of pagan demon, kind of like saying “candyman”. The whole set is made up of this eerie medieval psychedelia with synthesizers, typified by the brilliant use of an organ and theremin combo on this track. As a bonus the inside of the gatefold trumps Dr John’s Night Tripper for the coveted most doped up person on a record sleeve award.

CATHARSIS “Solstice” from Volume II Les “Chevrons” (Festival 1972)

Next up another treasure of mildly disturbing psychedelic proportions. I’m sure everyone’s familiar with the later albums released under the Electric Prunes’ name thanks to David Axelrod’s orchestral stylings, but personally I prefer the guitar based fuck-ry on this disc; perfectly demonstrating the moment in pop music history when psychotropic substances invaded the R&B of garage bands and everything got a bit bugged out. Here’s the lead single from the album, it’s probably one of the most intense tracks on here, but they’re all pretty mind blowing so who am I to judge.

THE ELECTRIC PRUNES “I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night” from The Electric Prunes (Reprise 1967)

This album by the Jaggerz is pretty well known by the beat digger community, even though it’s essentially nothing too special, mainly for this track, which has been sampled a whole heap of times. Keep your ears open for the drum break approximately three minutes in, if you don’t recognise other previous sections from various rap musics then you should do the drums.

THE JAGGERZ “Memoirs Of The Traveler” from We Went To Different Schools Together (Buddah 1970)

I’m pretty bored of typing now, so luckily here’s a couple of conjoined tracks from the fantastic b-side of Nino Ferrer’s awesome Metronomie LP. Can you guess the inspiration for the first track? The clue is in the title.

NINO FERRER “Cannabis” & “La Maison Pres De La Fontaine” from Metronomie (Riviera 1971)

…more bits from the crates very soon, so keep coming back. Oh and if you felt any emotions resulting from this post, then LEAVE A FUCKING COMMENT YOU UNGRATEFUL BASTARDS. Only kidding, sort of.

Just a final word on records for today….. go buy the freshly released Ultimate Force LP I’m Not Playing. Seriously. Don’t sleep.
